Defining and Customizing a Wildcard Number
You can use a Wildcard Number to define the behavior of a called party number across an area code or dialing prefix. When creating a new Wildcard Number, a question mark (?) is used to substitute the actual digits.
Examples
- The number 201221?????, when combined with Facility selected from the Block Type dropdown list on a Number Detail Record, blocks all calls to the 221 prefix in the 201 area code.
- The number 713482????*, when combined with Facility selected from the Block Type dropdown list and a specific site selected from the Site dropdown list on a Number Detail Record, blocks all calls to the 482 prefix in the 713 area code for the designated site only.
Since a Wildcard Number is often used to place a block on all calls to an area code or number prefix, an existing Wildcard Number may already exist in the Global Numbers library. Before setting up a new Wildcard Number you should perform a search for all existing Wildcard Numbers by selecting Show All Wildcard Numbers from the Quick Searches dropdown list.
